I have just seen dark black grease or oil weeping from the paddle
bearing on the outside bottom of the loaf pan.
None has leaked into the pan. My questions are; does this bearing
have to be re-packed or re-lubricated from time to time? How do I
replace the oil that has leaked out?
The shaft is held in with a removable clip (requires special expansion
pliers to remove).

Thanks for a great newsgroup.

It sounds like the bearing may need to be replaced. The black oozing isn't
really oil it's leakage of ingredients through the shaft opening.

If you have the tool, you can remove the clip and bearing assembly, wipe it
clean and re grease with a bit of high temperature food service grease, not
oil. This might do the trick, but eventually the bearing and seal will need
to be replaced. At that point you have to make a decision whether its worth
the price or should you just buy a new machine.

There is a product made especially for the food service industry. It comes
in a tube (like toothpaste) I have a tube around here, but can't locate it
right now...

My hubby re greased a couple of times and replaced the seal on my Hitachi
once, when it came time to do it again he bought me a new machine and re
greased the old one to keep as a spare.

There is another theory, "oiling the pan" see the link:

I don't really agree, but the choice is up to you.

Good luck

This is something I have never experienced in many years of using a
breadmaker.

If this grease doesn't leak into the pan (therefore leaving a stain on
the bottom of your bread), then the bread machine is OK. When the
grease goes in, you will need to replace the pan only. At that point,
as Rina said, you will need to think about which way is cheaper, buying
a new machine or replacing the loaf pan.

I had a bearing go bad on Hitachi bread machine pan. I tried various ways of
fixing it but with no success. Since the machine still works I tried to buy
a pan from Hitachi but I could get a new machine for a few dollars more. I've
also tried to find a pan on the net but no joy.

I wish I had something more hopeful to suggest. I still have the Hitachi but
I have no expectation of finding a pan

If you plan on buying a new bread machine, buy one with a four cup capacity
but only make 3 cup loafs. This will but less strain on the machine
